Experienced internet users are in huge demand in the world of web design. It’s a specialized industry – there is nothing else like it – and so people who have spent a lot of time using the internet have a definite advantage when it comes to knowing how a web page would look best and how users will expect to be able to interact with that page.
Technical skills are, of course, very helpful. If you can learn JavaScript, Flash, PHP, or other languages very well, you’ll be ahead of the group when it comes to getting started. But there’s more to it than just learning the specifics of how to control your tools. You have to know what to do with those tools, when to do it, and why it needs to be done. You need to teach yourself a thing or two about human psychology.
The most successful sites appeal to something most people don’t want to admit: most of us are looking for some distraction when we turn to the internet. We don’t necessarily want flashing lights and ads jumping up in front of our web browser all the time; that just makes people angry. But any one page, no matter what it may be, can get boring after some time looking at it. That’s why many sites now have links to other pages on their site on each page. The most obvious example is YouTube. On any given page on their site, you can find links to a dozen different related videos, and yet this constant interconnection doesn’t stop you from finding what it is you’re looking for, if you came for a specific video. Likewise, many news websites will have columns on the right and left, and maybe on the bottom, showing stories similar to the one the user is reading. Web design is not always about making people click; it’s just as well to simply give them something to click when they want to.
