After Googles algorithm change kicked in on the 21st April 2015, giving a significant boost to all websites that were mobile optimised, it left many internet users wondering whether such prominence should be afforded to those mobile optimised sites when most people were still using desktops.
Comscore reported today that for the very first time in March 2015 for the US internet population “the number of mobile-only adult internet users exceeded the number of desktop-only internet users.”
That is a very significant turning point, and top marks to Google for implementing the algorithm change just at the right time.
This revelation is also consistent with the overall decline in PC sales globally, which Gartner and IDC now agree is a decline of at least 5 percent in Q1 of 2015.
It may be more of a symbolic milestone than a material one though as that Comscore data show’s that only 22 percent is either pc or mobile only. Actually 78 percent of the US internet audience is « multi-platform », meaning that they access the internet on both PCs and mobile devices on a regular basis.
Whichever way you look at it, the clear message is that desktop only users are steadily decreasing as we become consumers of all things online via more and more mobile means.
